The Cowboy .45 Special is a case that is optimized for use with light loads in .45 Colt caliber revolvers for Cowboy Action Shooting. Light loads with excessive airspace are a recipe for case splits and erratic function. By using the Cowboy .45 Special case, with its .45 Colt rim and .45 Auto length, the problem no longer exists. While many claim that .45 Auto load data can be used in this caliber, it is important to realize the limitations of the firearm it is chambered in and only use loads that fall within the pressure range of that firearm. Generally these can be loaded using .45 Colt dies and a modified (shortened) crimp die, or .45 Auto Rim roll crimp die.

I bought these as a substitute for 45 Auto Rim to fit in my 1917 Colt. Out of the bag they didn’t fit, but after running them through the Lee 45 ACP die it FITS! Good price, too…

While this brass was produced for Cowboy Action Shooting, I found it is perfect when used in the Ruger .45 ACP/.45 Colt Convertible in the .45 ACP cylinder when using cast bullets that require a roll crimp. I use a Lee Factory crimp die with an extra roll crimp insert (with required spacer). It kind of works like using Auto Rim cases in double action revolvers for the single action. It headspaces perfectly in the .45 ACP cylinder.

Mine came through American Cowboy at higher prices. These are sleepers IMHO. I load em in an 1858 45 Colt Converter. I purchased custom L E Wilson Q holders to trim them back to 3/4’s inch, and roll crimp 263 gr. Webley H B bullets, over T 7, 2 F, and duplicate 455 Webley Mk VI performance. Taylor’s & Co. forbids using over powder wads and T 7 can’t be compressed, nor left with airspace under the bullet. Also, using taper crimps at original length they run through modern S & W 45 acp revolvers without using clips, or so it’s been reported, online?

I load these to 45 ACP specs. and they work great in my S & W GOVERNOR. Loaded with .410 000 Buck Shot and .45 Cowboy Special (3 of each) this is a deadly defense gun second to none.

I've been using these in a Taurus Tracker DA revolver chambered in 45 ACP. They work great. You don't need the moon clips for firing or ejecting empties. They make ejecting the empties the way the revolver is supposed to work. I use ACP dies for reloading using a shellholder for 45 Long Colt. Being the same length as ACP cases they don't foul up the chambers ahead of the case mouth and ACP ammo drops right in and functions normally.

I've used this brass supplied through another party for several years. While the smaller volume makes better use of smokeless powder, where it really shines is when loaded with black powder or substitute black powder. A proper load for Cowboy Action Shooting can be made without filler material and still have plenty of power and smoke. Thanks Starline for making this case available directly from your catalog.
